It - was in the time of autumn,
A / / / |D / / /|
The gol - den leaves lay all around,
D / / / |G / / /|
That we laid our dear old father,
|A / / / |D / / /
A-way - be-neath the cold damp ground.
|A / / / |D / / / |D /
It seems - but a short time a-go,
|A / / / |D / C /
That he - was in his fullest bloo - oo-oom,
|G / / / |D / / /
But death - a-las has laid him low,
|A / / / |D / / /|
A-no - ther victim to the tomb.
Many sad farewells were given,
Many bitter tears were shed,
Our sad hearts all beat with anguish,
As he lay on his dying bed.
On his savior's summons he was readied,
On his journey home to go,
And fearless drew near the dark valley,
Washed in His blood whiter than snow.
